Golshifteh Farahani

Golshifteh Farahani (in Persian: گلشیفته فراهانی), stage name of Rahavard Farahani (Tehran, Iran, July 10, 1983), is an actress, musician and singer with dual Iranian and French nationality.

She has acted in about twenty films , many of which have received international recognition. She was nominated for the Breakthrough Actress award for The Patience Stone at the 2014 César Awards and won the Best Actress Award for Boutique at the 26 Festival of the 3 Continents (Nantes, France).

In recent years, she has had roles in films by directors such as Asghar Farhadi, Bahman Ghobadi, Rasol Mollagholipoor, Jim Jarmusch, Ridley Scott, Joachim Rønning or Espen Sandberg.

After her performance in the American film Body of Lies, it turned out that the Iranian authorities had prevented her from leaving Iran. However, this was denied by her colleagues and she later attended the film’s premiere in the United States.

Golshifteh’s last film performance in Iran was in About Elly, directed by Asghar Farhadi. The film won the best picture award at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. Additionally, it won a Silver Bear at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival.

In January 2012, she campaigned against the repression of women in Iran, posing nude in the French magazine Le Figaro Madame.

Early Life of Golshifteh Farahani:

Golshifteh Farahani was born on July 10, 1983 in Tehran, the daughter of Behzad Farahani, director and stage actor, and Fahimeh Rahim Nia. Her sister is actress Shaghayegh Farahani. Golshifteh Farahani began studying music and playing the piano at the age of five.

She later entered a music school in Tehran and at age 14 she was selected to star in Dariush Mehrjui’s The Pear Tree. For this work, she won the Crystal Roc for Best Actress in the international section of the 16th Fajr International Film Festival, in Tehran.

Professional Life of Golshifteh Farahani:

In 2008 he participated in the film Network of Lies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In addition, Golshifteh Farahani was part of a rock band “Kooch Neshin” (“Nomads”), which won the 2nd Tehran Avenue award for rock from 2009.

Since leaving Iran, he has also continued his musical career, composing together with the exiled Iranian musician Mohsen Namjoo, his album Oy, released in October 2009.

Since his move to France, he has worked with conductors such as Roland Joffe, Hiner Saleem or Marjane Satrapi. He was also a member of the international jury at the 63rd Locarno Film Festival.

In 2012 he acted in the film The Patience Stone, directed by Atiq Rahimi based on the script of his own novel. His next film was Rumi’s Kimia, by Dariush Mehrjui, based on the novel Kimia Khatoon, by Saideh Ghods.

In 2016 she played Anna Karenina on the Paris stage and received rave reviews from the entire French press. In 2017, she appeared in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, the series starring Johnny Depp.

On August 8, 2008 he left his country, after numerous problems with the authorities. After spending a few years in France, in January 2012 the actress posed nude for the French publication Le Figaro, in a gesture of protest against the repression of women in Iran.

A few days later, the British newspaper Daily Telegraph reported that Government officials told Farahani that “Iran does not need actors or artists like you. It can offer its artistic services elsewhere.”

In February 2012, the actress appeared nude in the black and white short film Corps et Âmes, by Jean-Baptiste Mondino.
