Oprah Gail Winfrey (Kosciusko, Mississippi, January 29, 1954) is an American journalist, television host, producer, actress, businesswoman, philanthropist, and book critic. She was a multiple-time Emmy Award winner for her show The Oprah Winfrey Show, the most-watched talk show in American television history.
She is also an influential book critic, Oscar-nominated actress, and editor of her own magazine. According to Forbes magazine, she was the richest African-American person of the 20th century and the only person of black origin in the world, to possess more than a billion dollars for three consecutive years. She is also said to be the most powerful woman of 2005 according to Forbes.
The same magazine also named her the most powerful celebrity in 2005. 2007. 2008. 2010 and 2013.9 In 2014, Forbes ranked her 14th on its list of the 100 most powerful women in the world.
Life magazine has described her as the most influential woman of her generation and Time magazine has named her one of the four people who have shaped the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century.
In 2005, the Business Week magazine named her the greatest black-born philanthropist in US history. In 2010, Forbes magazine named her the most influential celebrity in the world.
In 2013, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian decoration in the United States.
In 2018, her speech against sexual harassment at the Golden Globes ceremony managed to get the entire audience on their feet and was the highlight of the night in support of the MeToo movement.
She was born to a single mother in rural Mississippi poverty and later raised in an outback city, Milwaukee. She described herself as a victim of sexual abuse and rape in adolescence, becoming pregnant at fourteen, the baby was born, and a few days later she died of illness. In 1986, the year of her Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role in The Color Purple, she founded her own production company, Harpo Productions. Harpo is her own name backwards and matches that of her fictional husband in said film.
The production company is founded to produce her show, which would be her greatest professional success. Later, the production company would be expanded with divisions to also produce radio, its own magazine, films, audiovisual production studios and even found its own television network.
On September 8, 1986 she premiered her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show, being the presenter. It is the work that has given her the most popularity, with hundreds of broadcasts until her farewell celebrating her twenty-five years on the air.
