Robert De Niro

Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. (born August 17, 1943, New York, USA) is an American actor, producer, and director. Best known for his work in crime films, thrillers, and collaborations with director Martin Scorsese. Winner of the Golden Globe (1981, 2011) and Oscar (1975, 1981).

Early Life & Childhood:

Robert De Niro grew up on the streets of Little Italy and the neighboring Greenwich Village area of lower Manhattan, which has been home to New York’s artistic and artistic bohemians for many years. For his pallor, Robert was nicknamed “Bobby Milk”.

At the age of 10, De Niro’s “absolute” artistic debut took place. He played the role of the cowardly Leo in the school production of the fairy tale “The Amazing Wizard of Oz.”

After studying at a private school for several years, Robert, at the insistence of his mother, entered the Fiorello LaGuardia Higher School of Music, Art and Performing Arts in New York (Al Pacino studied at the same institution).

De Niro attended courses by Stella Adler (who had previously met Konstantin Stanislavsky and actively promoted his theory of the super task), as well as Lee Strasberg’s acting studio.

The heirs of the classical school of theatrical craftsmanship instilled in Robert De Niro a commitment to the Stanislavsky system.

De Niro adopted Drena, a child of Dianna from her first marriage. Drena De Niro later often starred with his adoptive father: “Cheating,” “Great Expectations,” “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle,” “The Last Affair of Lamarca.”

From his first marriage, De Niro also has a son, Raphael. Growing up, the young man followed in his father’s footsteps, but quickly became disillusioned in the acting profession and took up the real estate business. In 1988, De Niro and Abbott’s marriage fell apart.

For a long time, the artist had a relationship with the former model Tookie Smith (also African American), without formalizing the relationship legally. In 1995, thanks to in vitro fertilization, a surrogate mother gave birth to two twin boys, Julian Henry and Aaron Kendrick, for a relatively middle-aged couple. De Niro often publicly emphasizes his paternity.

In 1997, Robert De Niro married for the second time. The new chosen one is Grace Hightower, a former stewardess. In 1998, they had a son, Elliot De Niro, and in 2011, a daughter, Helen Grace De Niro.

It was planned that for the Venice Film Festival in 2004, Robert De Niro will receive honorary Italian citizenship. The American society “Sons of Italy” and the Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi strongly objected to this.

The reason is the repeated incorrect formation of the image of an Italian American as a gangster and a criminal. However, citizenship was granted on October 21, 2006.

In politics, Robert De Niro consistently adheres to democratic views. On February 4, 2008, he took part in the election rally on the eve of Super Tuesday and supported Barack Obama.

Professional Life:

Contrary to the chronology adopted in various sources indicating the roles of De Niro, his first film work was not an episode in “Three Rooms in Manhattan” (1965).

The actor starred in 1963 in Brian De Palma’s The Wedding Party, in which he played one of the groom’s friends. Shooting a light comedy and farce became a good launching pad for several young actors at once.

However, due to the bankruptcy of the manufacturing company, the finished film lay on the shelf for 6 years and was released in 1969.

1973 is one of the most important years in Robert De Niro’s career. He plays baseball player Bruce Pearson in Beat the Drum Slowly, for which he receives the New York Film Critics Association Award (Best Supporting Actor), and with it fame and audience attention. Secondly, with the film “Wicked Streets”, he begins a long-term collaboration with Martin Scorsese.

For his role as Johnny Boy, De Niro also receives an award, this time by the US National Council of Film Critics in the category “Best Supporting Actor.” At the end of the year, he undergoes a screen test for the role of the young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather 2 project. Prior to being confirmed in this status, De Niro had previously auditioned for the roles of Sunny Corleone, Michael Corleone, Carlo Rizzi in the first film of the trilogy.

For his role as Don Vito, Robert De Niro won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The awarding of this prize is associated with two precedents. In the film, Vito Corleone speaks Italian, that is, an Oscar was awarded to an American actor for his role in a foreign language.

Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro were the only artists who received an Oscar for portraying the same character (but in different years of his life).

One after another followed roles that are successful both with critics and with the general audience: Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Alfredo Burlingieri in the film The Twentieth Century, Jimmy Doyle in the musical New York, New York, Mikhail Vronsky in the film “Deer Hunter”.

All these works were either awarded, or were nominated for the most prestigious film awards. The scene “in front of the mirror” from the movie “Taxi Driver” illustrates the scrupulousness of the actor’s role.

Recalling De Niro’s improvisation with the phrase “Did you tell me this?”, Screenwriter Paul Schroeder told Kevin Jackson in an interview.
