When Woodley was 4 years old, she started modeling for commercials. They were followed by roles in acting. She made her debut in 1999 in Replacing Dad, a television movie. Her next roles were on the 2000 television series The District; The O.C., in 2003 and Crossing Jordan in 2001, to name a few.
When Woodley was 15 years old, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, and had to wear a strap-on type and a ‘hateful’ – according to her – bra for two years, until her treatment ended; she added that she would not have hated the treatment so much if the treatment had not coincided with the divorce of her parents.
Since she was a child, she was a good student; according to her, her parents asked her to go out more often, since they believed that she had certain problems relating to relationships.
Professional Life of Shailene Woodley:
Woodley had numerous minor television roles. Her first starring role was in the television series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, playing the role of teenager Amy Juergens.
Following this, she made her film debut in the film Her Descendants playing Alexandra King, a role for which she was widely praised by critics. She was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of best-supporting actress and won the Independent Spirit Award for best-supporting actress.
Her next role was in The Spectacular Now. This film was also widely acclaimed by critics aside from her performance and her chemistry with Teller.
Her next film was White Bird in a Blizzard based on the novel of the same name, playing the role of Kat Connor. Her worldwide success came in 2014, when she played Tris Prior on Divergent. The film received mixed reviews, but her performance was praised.
“There is little artifice to her performance, and the worldly honesty of her reactions create a credibility the world would otherwise lack.” Her next role that same year, in Under the Same Star, was the most lauded. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Steven Rea gave the film a score of 3 out of 4; and said, “Woodley … balance grace with gravity, wit with heart”; both she and her lover in the film, Ansel Elgort, received mostly good reviews regarding her chemistry.
Although, many critics had in doubt that both could carry out a good paper, since, they had made of brothers in Divergent and would continue acting for the three following films of the same saga; Besides that, the actress did not look 16 years old like her in John Green’s novel she was described; even so, the film was well-received by the public.
It should be noted that that same year, she played Mary Jane Watson in the film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, however, all her scenes were removed from the final cut and it was planned that she would reappear in the sequel, The Amazing Spiderman 3, however, Due to scheduling problems as the series was canceled following the return of Spiderman’s film rights to Marvel Studios, Woodley never reprised his role.
In 2015, she returned to play ‘Tris’ in Insurgente. Like her predecessor, the film received mixed reviews, but her performance was once again praised alongside the performance of Theo James.
Her next role was in Snowden, a biopic based on the life of Edward Snowden, an informant, former CIA employee, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The movie was directed by Oliver Stone and she played Snowden’s girlfriend, Lindsay.
In 2016, she returned to reprise the role of ‘Tris’ in Leal, the third installment of the Divergent saga. Its sequel, Ascendant, was scheduled for June 2017 although due to the box office failure of its predecessor, rumors arose that Ascendant would be made into television as a movie and/or television series on Lionsgate TV. Given the confusion, Shailene Woodley stated that her contract did not include a television role so she would decline the role if she were offered the same.
