Amanda Michelle Seyfried was born on December 3, 1985 in Allentown (Pennsylvania). Her mother Ann is a therapist and her father, Jack, a pharmacist. Seyfried has an older sister, Jennifer, who is the lead singer of the Philadelphia group Love City.
She is of German descent. She grew up in her hometown, and attended William Allen High School, graduating in 2003. Later, she entered Fordham University in New York.
From a young age she showed talent for acting, becoming a model for product ads for children with mental problems and also took singing lessons. She started as a model when she was eleven years old, and was the image of three books by Francine Pascal.

From 2008 to 2010, she was romantically involved with her co-star in the movie Mamma Mia! Dominic Cooper. In 2013, she began a courtship with fellow actor Justin Long that lasted for 2 years.

She made her debut as a model at the age of eleven and as an actress at the age of fifteen.
Her acting career began in 1999 when she landed the role of Lucy Montgomery on the series As The World Turns, working on twenty-seven episodes from 1999 to 2001. She also starred in the American soap opera All My Children in 2002 and 2003.
In 2004 she auditioned for the roles of Regina George or Cady Heron in the movie Mean Girls, which was finally played by actresses Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan, respectively. Seyfried finally gave life to Karen Smith. That same year she also guest-starred on an episode of the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
