Emily was born in Melbourne, Australia to Shelley and Andrew Browning. She has two younger brothers, Nicholas and Matthew.
Browning learned to speak with an American accent by watching Sesame Street on ABC. She was in Melbourne to take a break from her career, in November 2006, to complete her “Victorian Certificate of Education” exams.
Professional Life of Emily Browning:
Emily’s career began at the age of nine when she was seen by a friend’s father at a school function, and he recommended that Emily continue acting like a professional. Soon after, she won a role opposite Judy Davis in The Echo of Thunder.
A successful career in Australian film and television productions soon followed, such as the movie The Man Who Sued God, in which she played the daughter of the character of Billy Connolly. She later co-starred with Conolly again in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, where she played the role of Violet Baudelaire.
She had a recurring role as Hayley Fulton on the television series Blue Heelers from 2000 to 2002. She also played as Katie Harwood in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship; the same year she won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Young Actress and was nominated for the following year. All without ever having taken a single acting class.
In 2006 Browning appeared in the music video for the song “Light Surrounding You” by the New Zealand band Evermore.
She came to L’Oreal Fashion Festival as an ambassador on February 1, 2007.
In 2009, she starred in the film The Uninvited, an American remake of the Korean Two Sisters, which was filmed on Bowen Island, British Columbia, and Vancouver.

In 2011 she was the protagonist of the action film by director Zack Snyder, Sucker Punch, where she plays a beautiful young woman who, after the death of her parents, and her confinement in a boarding school, invents a fantasy in order to seek her freedom accompanied by Abbie Cornish and Jena Malone.
She also replaced Mia Wasikowska in Sleeping Beauty, a film about a young woman who is trapped in the world of drugs and prostitution. She was also nominated by the MTV website “Nextmovie.com” as one of the ” 25 celebrities to watch out for in 2011.
Throughout the month of April and the first week of May 2012, Browning was filming a movie in Chile. The film is titled Magic, Magic by Chilean director Sebastián Silva. The filming locations were mainly Lago Ranco and La Unión, in southern Chile. But some scenes were also captured in Santiago de Chile.
The cast includes Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Luis Dubó, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. The film tells the story of a girl (Temple) who is invited by her best friend (Browning) on vacation to Chile where, after a trip to the south of the country, she loses control of reality.
The film premiered in 2013. Also in 2013, Browning played Pet / Wanderer in The Guest alongside Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, and Max Irons. Browning’s role in The Host is very short as he only comes out at the end of the film.
In 2014 Browning plays Cassia in the film Pompeii, which is accompanied by Kit Harington, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Kiefer Sutherland The film is about a slave-gladiator (Harington) who tries to rescue his beloved (Browning) from a corrupt Senator (Sutherland) as Mount Vesuvius devastates the city of Pompeii.
In 2015 Browning returns to his old ways this time in the film Legend, which plays Frances Shea, in the story that tells the life of the Kray twins, the most dangerous gangsters in London in the 50’s and 60’s, who accompanies Tom Hardy and Paul Bettany.
