Kesha, formerly Kesha born Kesha Rose Sebert (Los Angeles, March 1, 1987), is an American singer-songwriter, actress and activist.
In 2005, at the age of 18, he signed a deal with Dr. Luke’s record label, Kemosabe Entertainment. Despite having been active in the music business since that year singing in the choir of songs by other artists and participating in music videos, her solo debut came in 2009, when she duet with Flo Rida on her number-one single Right Round.
Her debut album Animal and her reissue Cannibal were released in 2010, the first in January and the second in November. Kesha’s irreverent style guaranteed her immediate commercial success: the album reached the top of the US chart and four global hits were extracted from it, including Tik Tok, the most famous.
We R Who We R and Blow, the singles belonging to the reissue, also entered the top positions of the US chart. At the same time, Kesha went on to write songs for other artists, including Britney Spears’ Till the World Ends.
In 2012 he released his second studio album Warrior, from which Die Young, C’Mon and Crazy Kids are extracted as singles. From 2014 to 2016 she waged a legal battle against her longtime producer Dr. Luke, accusing him of sexual violence against him, which kept her away from the music scene for over two years. At the same time, the singer enters a rehabilitation clinic for eating disorders.
In 2017 he returns with his third studio album Rainbow, promoted by the acclaimed single Praying. Both works receive a nomination each for the Grammy Awards 2018. In 2019 he released the single Raising Hell, the pioneering single of his fourth album, entitled High Road.
Kesha was born in Los Angeles, California on March 1, 1987. Her mother, Pebe Sebert, is a singer-songwriter who ran into financial problems when she found herself in the situation of having to financially support Kesha and her brother Lagan as well as herself: in that period in fact had to refer to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a charity with the aim of helping people in difficulty by providing them with food.
When Kesha was a child, her mother often took her on stage with her when she performed. Kesha said she has never heard of her father’s identity. Two of her maternal great-grandparents were immigrants from Szentes, a city in southern Hungary, while her maternal great-grandmother was from Poland. In 1991 Pebe moved with her family to Nashville, Tennessee after receiving a new contract as a writer of lyrics. Kesha’s younger brother Louis was born shortly after the move.
Kesha said she was unable to fit into her school in Brentwood, a suburb of Nashville, part of that area of the United States called the “Bible Belt”, because her nonconformist style of dressing, such as homemade purple velvet pants and purple hair, made her totally different from other students and, in their eyes, bizarre. The Sebert’s were part of an episode of The Simple Life as the host family of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in 2005. Kesha then attended Franklin High School and Brentwood High School.
She played the trumpet and saxophone in the school band and described herself in an interview with National Public Radio as a diligent student. Pebe often took Kesha and her siblings with her to the recording studios and began urging her daughter to sing when she noticed her singing skills. In addition to attending singing lessons,
Kesha learned to write music thanks to her mother, with whom she often composed songs after school. Kesha soon started recording demos with Pebe and letting acquaintances listen to them. Kesha was also in a band with her brother Lagan.
Kesha and Pebe wrote the song, Stephen, together when Kesha was sixteen and contacted David Gamson, a producer she knew through the band Scritti Politti and whom she admired, who agreed to produce the song. She left school at seventeen after Dr. Luke and Max Martin convinced her to return to Los Angeles to start her music career.

In 2005, at the age of eighteen, Kesha signed a deal with Dr. Luke’s record label, Kemosabe Entertainment, and her respective music writing business, Prescription Songs.
Kesha sang in the choir of Paris Hilton’s single Nothing in This World in 2006. Dr. Luke was busy with other projects at the time, having shortly before achieved massive success with Kelly Clarkson’s second album, Breakaway.
In 2006 Kesha also signed a contract with David Sonenberg’s management association, DAS Communications Inc., rarely coming into contact with Dr. Luke for a period.
The association promised Kesha to get her a record deal with a major label within a year in exchange for 20% of her earnings, with the singer being able to end the contract if that didn’t work.
He worked with many writers and producers while the contract with the association was in effect, including Toby Gad, with whom he wrote This Love by the Veronicas.
As she continued to record in the studio, Kesha earned her living as a waitress. He stated that he added the dollar sign to his stage name while he was in financial trouble to joke:
“I was so happy when I was broke. And I was happy when I wasn’t broke. I don’t care that much anyway. I care about taking care of those who have taken care of me – it is important to me. But to be honest, I’m quite repulsive of the greed and excesses of many of the people in the limelight. “
In 2008 Kesha appeared in the video for Katy Perry’s debut single, I Kissed a Girl, and sang in the choir of a song produced by Dr. Luke, Britney Spears’ Lace and Leather.
Thanks to DAS, Kesha attracted the attention of Kara DioGuardi, who wanted her to sign a contract with Warner Bros. Records. However, it was not possible to sign the contract as the one between her and Dr. Luke’s label was still in effect. In September, she terminated her contract with DAS, and returned to Dr. Luke.
Kesha began gaining media attention in early 2009, when she duet with US rapper Flo Rida on her number one single Right Round. The collaboration was born by chance: he was in fact present at the recording session of the piece with Flo Rida and Dr. Luke. Flo Rida also wanted a female voice in his song, so Dr. Luke introduced him to Kesha.
Flo Rida liked the result to the point that she required the recording of two more songs with her. In any case, she is not credited in the US version of Right Round, and she has not been paid in any way. She also refused to appear in the video, explaining to Esquire magazine that she wanted to become famous for herself and build an image for herself.
On June 16, 2010, Kesha held a concert for charity: the proceeds, over $ 70,000, were donated to the victims of the floods in Tennessee in May 2010. Kesha has been elected the first universal ambassador of the Humane Society, with the task of focusing on the mistreatment of animals, such as the experimentation of cosmetics on them and shark hunting.
It also donated 450 kilograms (1,000 lbs) of dog food to the Nashville Abandoned Animal Center during the May 2010 floods, as well as money for people in distress following the natural disaster.
He then made an appearance with singer Iggy Pop in a PETA promotional campaign, where he protested the mistreatment of baby seals in Canada; he then wrote about the conditions of the butchers that supply McDonald’s fast food outlets. Kesha is also a supporter of LGBT rights.
